Jetties and Groins

Jetties, also known as terminal groins, or groynes, are structures either built as a singular unit or built in pairs perpendicular to the coastline for Hurricane Storm Protection at harbor or river mouth entrances to prevent shoaling or accretion of littoral sand drift at your Caribbean project locations such as Bahamas, Exumas, Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, St. Kitts, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago or Belize in Central America. They also protect channels and inlets from storm waves and cross-currents. These GeoTextile tubes and bags can be filled with sand and used as semipermanent shore protection structures for the purpose of:

  • wave attenuation
  • sediment retention including groins
  • breakwaters
  • sills
  • dune fortification
  • river training

Geotextile tubes are positioned empty and then filled by inserting a dredge discharge pipe into ports on the tops of tubes or gravity-filled using a hopper. A typical geotextile tube would sit on top of a scour apron held in place by anchor tubes

Groins, or groynes, are wall-like structures built seaward from the shore to build up or preserve an accretion beach by trapping littoral sand drift on the updrift side. GeoTextile Tubes are commonly used Hurricane Storm Protection provide both a complete jetty or groin as well as providing only the core that is subsequently encapsulated by a hardened protective armor, such as riprap.
